EPRI honors Southern Company and Georgia Power's Plant Yates for leadership in mercury emissions control technology
EPRI presented 2005 Technology Transfer Achievement Awards to Southern Company and the staff and management of Georgia Power's Plant Yates in a ceremony at the plant, near Newnan, Ga.

Excelsior College adds power plant technology specialty to degree programs
Following recent approval from the New York State Education Department (NYSED), Excelsior College will offer a Power Plant Technology specialty option to its Associate in Science (A.S.), Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.), and Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree students beginning July 1, 2005.

Commission adopts remedy to maintain rough production costs equalization on the Entergy System
The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission agreed with an administrative law judge's February 2004 finding that the allocation of production costs among the Entergy System operating companies is no longer just and reasonable. "The Entergy System is no longer in rough production cost equalization," the Commission said, "and therefore use of a bandwidth remedy is appropriate."

NRC adds Syria to list of embargoed destinations
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has revised its import/export regulations to reflect current U.S. law and foreign policy on Syria. The changes remove Syria from the list of restricted destinations for exports and add it to the list of embargoed destinations. These changes are necessary to conform the NRC's export controls to the Syria Accountability and Lebanese Sovereignty Restoration Act of 2003.

NYPA president Zeltmann re-elected EPRI chairman
Eugene W. Zeltmann, president and chief executive officer of the New York Power Authority, has been re-elected to a second one-year term as chairman of the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), the power industry's international research and technology organization.

Gestalt, a business and information technology services firm providing strategic consulting and decision support technologies to the defense and energy and utilities industries, announced that, at the request of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), it presented a report on Information Technology Guidelines for Power System Operators.

National Environmental Justice Advisory Council charter renewed
The charter for the federal advisory panel that provides advice and recommendations on broad environmental justice issues has been extended until Sept. 26, 2006. The NEJAC advises the EPA administrator on how to extend environmental protection to all its programs, policies and activities, particularly those with environmental degradation that has not been properly addressed, and recommends ways to facilitate more public participation in government decision-making.
