NRC to discuss results of special inspection at Hope Creek plant
Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff will meet with representatives of Public Service Electric and Gas (PSEG) on Jan. 5 to discuss the results of an NRC special inspection conducted at the Hope Creek nuclear power plant. The inspection was performed at the PSEG-operated facility in Hancocks Bridge (Salem County), N.J., in response to a steam line failure and shutdown with complications that occurred there on Oct. 10.

Let the process move forward
New Jersey Governor Richard Codey (D) and others have recently stated that they intend to impose a moratorium on clean, renewable offshore wind energy development while the state "comes up with a policy on them." In fact, an extensive regulatory framework already exists at both the state and federal level that requires a rigorous environmental review based on a clearly defined public review process.

Industry votes to approve Version 0 Reliability Standards
The North American Electric Reliability Council (NERC) announced that the industry stakeholders voted to approve the proposed Version 0 Reliability Standards by a 94.4 percent weighted vote. The proposed standards translate existing NERC operating policies, planning standards, and compliance requirements into an integrated and comprehensive set of measurable reliability standards.

FCC ruling seen as favorable to broadband over powerlines
The October FCC ruling on broadband-over-power-line (BPL) technology effectively removes some uncertainties affecting utility investment in BPL. The FCC said its ruling was intended "to encourage the development of Access Broadband over Power Line (Access BPL) systems while safeguarding existing licensed services against harmful interference."

President Bush nominates Secretary of Energy
