PSE announces intent to buy 220 megawatts of wind power Puget Sound Energy (the utility subsidiary of Puget Energy) recently signed a letter of intent (LOI) with Houston-based Zilkha Renewable Energy to obtain 100-percent ownership of Zilkha's proposed 220-megawatt (MW) Wild Horse Wind Power Project located in the eastern part of Washington state's Kittitas County. It is the next step in an ongoing process to acquire renewable energy as part of a strategic plan to secure low-cost, long-term diverse resources for its growing customer base.

Smud celebrates 20 years of solar power dedicates expansion of one of the world's first solar plants The Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) celebrated the 20th anniversary of one of its first major solar installations, PV1, with the dedication of new solar arrays at the site, PV6. The new installation, increases generation from the solar plant to 3.2 megawatts (MW), enough to power more than 2,200 single-family homes. Twenty years ago, PV1 generated one MW, powering about 700 typical homes.
30,000 PGE customers sign up for renewable power Portland General Electric (PGE) green power customers have reached a new milestone: 30,000 customers have enrolled. The total is up more than 600 percent since the company 's new renewable power program began in March 2002, and 20 percent in the past year, making it one of the fastest growing green electricity programs in the country.
U.S. wind farming to conduct repowering of Altamont Pass, California The California Energy Commission (www.energy.ca.gov) recently announced that the new, 520-page report, titled "Developing Methods to Reduce Bird Mortality in the Altamont Pass Wind Resource Area," suggests that the installation of new, taller wind turbines at California's second largest wind farm could significantly reduce the annual number of bird deaths, currently ranging from 1,766 to 4,721.
Federal agencies recognize environmental benefits of NYPA fuel cells The New York Power Authority (NYPA) was among those organizations honored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Department of Energy (DOE) at an industry conference in New York City for its installation late last year of eight fuel cells at four sewage treatment plants operated by the New York City Department of Environmental Protection (NYCDEP).
