Heartland Inc. develops new composting technology for earth-friendly fertilizer development
Heartland Inc. announced it has developed a new composting technology that potentially may revolutionize the production of fertilizer in an earth-friendly and environmentally safe manner.

ALSTOM ParticipatES in mercury pilot project at Poplar River Station in Canada
ALSTOM is now taking part in the Emissions Control Research Facility (ECRF) operating at Saskatchewan Power's Poplar River Station. The ECRF has been recently commissioned to study the effect of dedicated mercury control technologies on boilers combusting lignite fuels.

Mirant to make significant emission reductions in Massachusetts
Mirant announced it will improve Massachusetts air quality by significantly reducing emissions from its 1,100 megawatt oil and natural gas fired power plant in Sandwich, MA. Mirant's Canal plant is the first power plant in Massachusetts to undertake early emission reductions as part of the State's effort to achieve the toughest air emission standards in the U.S. for steam-electric plants.

OG&E exploring possibility of more wind power
OG&E Electric Services said it is exploring adding another 80 megawatts of wind-generated electricity to its system and has issued a request for proposals from companies who produce electricity from wind.

EPA proposes additional options for determining transportation impacts on particulate matter air quality standards
EPA is publishing a Supplemental Notice of Proposed Rulemaking with optional methods and procedures for determining localized concentrations of particulate matter (PM) in areas where transportation conformity is required for PM2.5 and PM10. Transportation conformity is required by the Clean Air Act to ensure that federally supported highway and transit project activities do not cause new air quality violations, worsen existing violations, or delay timely attainment of an air quality standard.

Duke Power to voluntarily install emission controls at Lee Steam Station
Duke Power has entered into a voluntary agreement with the South Carolina Department of Health & Environmental Control to install additional nitrogen oxide emission controls on its coal-fired Lee Steam Station in Williamston. The controls support the Greenville/Spartanburg/Anderson Early Action Compact to reduce smog-forming emissions in Upstate South Carolina.

GE to supply 207 wind turbines for MidAmerican Energy Company's wind generation project
GE Energy has been selected as the wind turbine supplier for MidAmerican Energy Company's 310.5-megawatt project in Iowa that, when completed in 2005, will be among the world's largest wind generation facilities.

EPRI's technology wins runner-up in Wall Street Journal's Technology Innovation Awards
Technology from EPRI provides improved means of reducing mercury emissions from coal-fired power plants.

Strict limits will force air pollution cuts and keep coal dominant, study says
Strict new air emissions requirements will force significant shifts in utility strategies and coal distribution patterns -- and will require utility investments of up to $64 billion to achieve emissions reductions.

Tax credit extension puts wind industry back to work; 2005 expected to break capacity installation records
With the extension of the federal wind energy production tax credit in September, capacity installations in 2005 look likely to beat all previous records, the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) said in its quarterly U.S. market outlook. The previous high for new wind power capacity installations in one year was 1,696 megawatts (MW) in 2001. Most industry participants agree that 2005 will be a better year, with some predicting installations to exceed 2,500 MW.
