Utilities slowly restoring power after Ike

Sugar Land, TX, Sept. 17, 2008 -- The Public Utilities Commission of Texas estimates that Hurricane Ike caused up to 2.87 million homes and businesses to lose power.

On Tuesday (Sept. 16) morning, 2.1 million homes and businesses were still without power throughout the 80 Texas counties that were estimated to have been affected. CenterPoint Energy Inc. (Houston, TX) was the largest distribution company to suffer damage from Hurricane Ike, reporting almost 2.2 million customers, about 99 percent, of its service territory suffering from outages.

Entergy Texas Inc. (Beaumont, Texas), a subsidiary of Entergy Corp., reported that 392,000 of its customers were without power, and Southwestern Electric Power Co. (Columbus, Ohio), a subsidiary of American Electric Power Co., said that about 70,000 of its Texas customers were affected.
