Findings of 20,000-mile power line reliability survey to be released at DistribuTECH 2008

Columbus, Ohio, Dec. 19, 2007 -- Over the last 12 months, Exacter Inc. of Columbus, Ohio, has used its proprietary outage-avoidance technology to survey more than 20,000 miles of U.S. distribution lines. The company says this is the broadest survey of its kind ever completed in the U.S. and the most miles surveyed by any type of technology.

A summary of the findings will be presented at DistribuTECH 2008 on Wednesday Jan. 23, from 10:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. in the pressroom (Room 4) located on the first level of the Tampa Convention Center. A period of questions and answers will take place afterward, and written and electronic versions of the report will be delivered to members of the press in attendance.

Working in collaboration with approximately 20 utilities from January 2007 through January 2008, electrical circuit lines were surveyed to detect potential equipment or line failures using the Exacter Outage-Avoidance System. Maps and reports were generated for the participating utilities identifying specific GPS coordinates of signal abnormalities.

In addition to the map and GPS coordinates, The Exacter System also quantified the signal intensity of each potential failure emission recorded to help utilities prioritize preventive maintenance.

"The numbers and statistics we've tabulated are interesting and do shed light on what's happening out there in an aging distribution network," said John Lauletta, Exacter Inc. founder and president. "But what's more relevant has been our interaction with the various utilities in streamlining the data and developing processes that allow for meaningful and workable ways to do intelligent preventive maintenance -- the work that truly avoids power outages."

At the press conference, Lauletta will share:

* Statistical data on failure signatures across the 20,000-mile sampling
* Comparative data vs. Department of Energy studies and other reports
* Observations on the biggest challenges to improve reliability
* Opportunities for utilities to integrate multiple technology solutions
* Results and conclusions from collaborations with multiple utilities
