PSO nearly done with recovery effort after fierce Oklahoma ice storm downs lines

Tulsa, OK, Dec. 17, 2007 -- The winter storm that brought heavy freezing rain and caused thick ice accumulations on trees and overhead power lines across Oklahoma December 9 and 10, knocked out electric service to more than half of Public Service Co. of Oklahoma's (PSO) customers across the state, as well as more than half of PSO´s customers in the Tulsa metro area, at its peak.

The heavy icing caused thousands of trees and limbs to collapse into PSO´s overhead electric system, and broke many hundreds of utility poles. In response, PSO assembled a massive work force including utility workers from other electric utilities and utility contractors from outside the state, some from as far away as West Virginia, to assist PSO crews with the power restoration effort. The company has more than 2,400 line workers and 2,200 tree trimmers working just in the Tulsa metro area. (Click here to see pictures of the restoration effort.)

As of Dec. 17, PSO restored power to approximately 225,000 customers who lost electric service in the ice storm. PSO is working to complete restoration of service to the approximately 30,000 PSO customers who remain without electric service.

The company's goal is to complete restoration to 95 percent of the customers who can take electric service by midnight, Tuesday, Dec. 18. The remaining 5 percent includes customers who have individual service damage, and small groups of customers who have severe, localized damage to the portion of the electric system that serves them.
