Las Vegas, NV, Dec. 7, 2005 -- GE Energy has added a Mobile Substation Transformer to its fleet of rental equipment for the power generation and distribution industry. At 33 MVA, the new unit is one of the largest fully mobile transformers in the rental market.
The oil-filled transformers will be mounted on flatbed trailers, for easy transportation to customer sites. The new mobile units are available on demand from GE Energy.
The new offering was initiated by GE in response to a growing industry demand for a short-term substation transformer solution, either to replace failed equipment or to facilitate transmission system expansions. In parts of the United States, particularly the Northeast, transmission and distribution (T&D) equipment is aging, and the industry is seeing a significant number of equipment failures every year.
The new GE Energy rental offering fills an important niche in the T&D industry, said Dan Heintzelman, president of energy services for GE Energy, "Currently, there are very few substation-sized transformers in the rental market. The larger units typically are owned within a regional T&D pool, while the rental market consists of a handful of mobile units in the 10-20 MVA range. Rental units larger than 20 MVA typically are not truly mobile, but are pad-mounted units that require significantly more site preparation and commissioning expense than the GE Mobile Substation Transformer will."
