Progress Energy's project share campaign raises more than $680,000 in 2004

RALEIGH, N.C., Dec. 22, 2004 (PRNewswire) -- Progress Energy announced that its annual Project Share campaign raised $681,000 in 2004. The entire amount of funds raised has already been distributed to families in the Carolinas who need assistance paying energy bills.

The Progress Energy Project Share program is maintained through voluntary contributions from employees of Progress Energy subsidiaries, shareholders, customers, civic organizations, churches and the Progress Energy Foundation, which provided $250,000 in matching funds this year.

"With the cold snap that moved through this week, we are reminded just how important Project Share is for customers needing assistance with their power bills," said Bob McGehee, Progress Energy chairman and CEO. "Thanks to those whose generosity has helped make a positive impact in the lives of thousands of families in the Carolinas this winter."

Since it began in 1982, the program has provided more than $15 million to families in need who live in the Progress Energy Carolinas service area. The program provides assistance to residential customers whose income is at or below 150 percent of the federal poverty level and who are experiencing a heating- or cooling-related crisis. The North Carolina Division of Social Services and the South Carolina Division of Economic Opportunity determine customer eligibility, using information Progress Energy provides social service caseworkers in each county.

To contribute to Progress Energy Project Share, write a personal check to "Project Share" and mail to: Central Remittance, Progress Energy, P.O. Box 2041, Raleigh, NC 27602. For more information about receiving assistance through Project Share, customers should contact their local social services department.
