SANDWICH, Mass., Dec. 20, 2004 (PRNewswire-FirstCall) -- Mirant announced it will improve Massachusetts air quality by significantly reducing emissions from its 1,100 megawatt oil and natural gas fired power plant in Sandwich, MA. Mirant's Canal plant is the first power plant in Massachusetts to undertake early emission reductions as part of the State's effort to achieve the toughest air emission standards in the U.S. for steam-electric plants.
The reductions will occur under an agreement announced today between Mirant and the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and a coalition of Cape Cod environmental leaders. In accordance with the agreement, Mirant will reduce sulfur dioxide emissions by approximately 75 percent and emissions of nitrogen oxides by approximately 46 percent. Both reduction targets will be achieved by September 30, 2006.
"Through cooperation with the local community and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, the agreement ensures cleaner air and enables Mirant to continue to generate reliable electricity," said Lisa Johnson, president of Mirant's Mid-Atlantic and Northeast businesses.
The agreement results from Mirant's efforts to work with Cape Clean Air and other Massachusetts environmental organizations to improve air quality in Massachusetts.
