ABB launches distribution management system

RALEIGH, N.C. Dec. 15, 2004 -- ABB, a power and automation technology company, announced it is launching an integrated system for power distribution companies, Network Manager DMS. The system combines the company's proven distribution and outage management technologies in an integrated solution, and can also work with ABB's Network Manager SCADA system to form a fully integrated Control Room system operating environment.

Says Karl Elfstadius, Group Vice President and head of ABB's Network Management business unit, "Network Manager DMS was designed from the outset to merge previously separate functions under a single user interface in order to enable better planning and operation of the distribution network."

Network Manager DMS integrates planning features such as load flow and switching analysis with outage management functions like fault location. It also supports customer service during outages by mapping faults to customers, enabling call centers to provide much more specific information during critical periods.

"One of the underlying principles of this system is the rapid sharing of information," adds Elfstadius. "Whether for handling routine switching, system planning, setting budgets, or informing customers during a storm, the key to all of these activities is information. Network Manager DMS enables the flow of information about the status of the network to the many different groups that need it."
