U.S. should rejoin international fusion program, report says

Dec. 30, 2003 -- The United States should rejoin an international effort to build a fusion experimental reactor, a multibillion-dollar project involving Japan, Russia, Canada and European nations, asserted the Burning Plasma Assessment Committee of the National Research Council.

The committee's new report is available to read at http://www.nap.edu/catalog/10591.html?onpi_topnews_122002.

Experiments to harness fusion, the reaction that powers the stars, could lead to a clean energy source for the world. Recent progress in understanding and controlling plasmas and developing fuel and components for a burning plasma reactor suggests the project can be carried out successfully, authors of the report wrote.
