Dec. 30, 2003 -- The United States should rejoin an international effort to build a fusion experimental reactor, a multibillion-dollar project involving Japan, Russia, Canada and European nations, asserted the Burning Plasma Assessment Committee of the National Research Council.

Experiments to harness fusion, the reaction that powers the stars, could lead to a clean energy source for the world. Recent progress in understanding and controlling plasmas and developing fuel and components for a burning plasma reactor suggests the project can be carried out successfully, authors of the report wrote.
